Story Details

I wish Mom would smile brightly on Christmas night,” Ben whispered, watching the snowflakes dance outside their tiny window.

No tree, no gifts, just the icy wind rattling their small hut. His mom sighed, her tired eyes dim.

Ben’s heart ached. He had to make her smile!

First, Ben zipped into the frosty woods. He hunted for fallen pine branches, dodging prickly bushes. His fingers turned numb, but he gathered an armful, tying them with scratchy straw.

He found shiny chestnut shells and hard corn kernels, even bright red berries clinging to a hidden bush.

Back home, he strung them onto the branches, humming a wobbly tune. “Mom, a Christmas bush!” he chirped, presenting his creation.

She patted his head, a small, soft smile gracing her lips. *Almost there*, Ben thought.

Next, Ben rummaged through their meager pantry. He found a forgotten apple, shriveled but sweet. He polished it until it gleamed like a ruby.

He remembered a story about a dancing apple. He twirled the apple on a string, making it bob and weave. His mom chuckled, a warm sound like crackling fire. “Look, Mom, a dancing apple!” he shouted.

Her smile grew, a little brighter, a little wider. *Closer!* Ben’s heart thumped with excitement.

Finally, Ben grabbed his worn wooden toy soldier. He tied a tiny scrap of red cloth around its neck like a scarf. He made the soldier march across the table, saluting his mom. “Attention, Mom! Your special Christmas guard!” he declared.

His mom laughed! A real, big, belly laugh that bounced off the walls. Her eyes sparkled like new fallen snow in the moonlight. She pulled him close, her hug soft and warm.

Suddenly, a knock! Their neighbor, Mrs. Gable, stood there with a warm loaf of bread.

Then, Mr. Henderson, the tailor, brought a cozy, new scarf for Ben.

Soon, the little room was filled with villagers, each bringing a small gift, their faces glowing. Laughter and songs filled their tiny home.

Ben looked at his mom, her face shining with joy. He knew then. Santa wasn’t far away at all. He lived in every heart that knew how to share.
