Lan gasped. Grandma’s shaking hands dropped the big mixing spoon. "Too weak, dear," Grandma sighed, sinking into her armchair. Christmas cookies! Every year, sweet smells hugged their house. This year, no cookies? Lan stomped her foot. Impossible!

She rummaged through Grandma’s old recipe box. Dust motes danced in the sunlight. A tiny, crinkled card peeked out. "One cup of love," Lan read aloud, "two spoons of patience, and a pinch of smiles." Lan giggled. What kind of cookie recipe was this? Grandma just winked. It wasn’t for cookies at all! It was for a happy life, Grandma always said.

Lan marched to the kitchen. First, the flour. It puffed up like a cloud. Her little brother, Tom, sneezed, sending a flurry of white dust everywhere. Mom laughed, scooping sugar. Dad, usually busy with his tools, carefully cracked eggs. Crash! One shell flew into the bowl. Oh dear! Lan plucked it out, giggling. The kitchen became a flurry of happy chaos.

Next, the spices! Cinnamon whirled, nutmeg fluttered. Lan stirred and stirred. The dough grew sticky, then smooth. They rolled it, cut out stars and bells. Tom giggled, making a cookie shaped like a wobbly snowman.

The oven timer dinged! Golden, warm cookies filled the air with their delicious scent. Grandma, eyes twinkling, took a tiny bite. A tear slipped down her cheek. "It tastes like home," she whispered, a big smile spreading across her face.

That night, they piled cookies high on plates. Ding-dong! The Smiths, their next-door neighbors, smiled wide. Ding-dong! Mrs. Gable, from down the street, clapped her hands. Lan watched as everyone munched, their faces glowing.

The cookies were good, yes. But the happy faces, the shared laughter, the warm glow in Grandma’s eyes—that was the real sweetness. Much better than any sugarplum.
