Barnaby, a giant as tall as three oak trees, only ever whispered. A dropped feather made him jump! Then, a lost star, glittery and bright, tumbled right into his quiet valley. *ZZZZZZZZZ-WEEE!* it hummed, a sound louder than a hundred crickets chirping at once.
Barnaby clapped his enormous hands over his ears. The star, no bigger than a bumblebee, bounced on a lily pad. *BZZZT!* it hummed again. Barnaby, even with his ears covered, felt the thrumming deep in his bones. How could he help this noisy little star?
He leaned closer, very, very slowly, his face like a mountain peaking over a flower. He cupped his giant ear, listening past the *BZZZT-WEEE* to a tiny, frightened tremble beneath it. The star was lost!
Barnaby gently scooped the star onto his palm. He started walking, tip-toeing so carefully, his feet barely rustling the grass. *BZZZT!* The star hummed. Barnaby whispered, "Up, little friend. Up to the sky." He lifted his hand higher, higher, trying to match the star's tiny, rapid hums with his own soft breaths. He met a family of field mice, their whiskers twitching. "It's a very talkative star," Barnaby whispered. The mice squeaked, pointing their tiny paws to the highest branch of an old willow.
Barnaby climbed the willow, his movements slow and steady. *BZZZT-WEEE!* The star vibrated. Barnaby whispered, a soft rumble in his chest, "Almost there." The willow swayed. Barnaby saw a group of fireflies, winking their lights. "It needs its home," he whispered. The fireflies blinked, guiding him to the tallest peak of the jagged mountains.
Barnaby hiked, his giant strides making the earth tremble just a bit. *BZZZT-WEEE-ZUM!* The star hummed faster, brighter. Barnaby, reaching the mountain top, held the star up.
He took a very, very deep breath. He launched the star, a perfect, gentle arc, into the midnight blue. *WHOOSH!* It zipped back to its place, twinkling brilliantly, a silent, happy wink just for Barnaby.
His valley was quiet again, but a new, soft hum stayed in his heart.
