Story Details

Lily, always wearing her fluffy red mittens, even when the sun beamed big and bright, skipped into her garden. Oh no! Her tiny green plants looked sad. Their little leaves drooped, like sleepy puppies. The hot sun was too much!

“My poor plants!” Lily cried, her voice a squeak. She had to help! Her mittens, so cozy and warm, felt like the perfect shade. First, she carefully pulled one red mitten off her left hand. It felt strange, her bare fingers wiggling. She draped the mitten over a small daisy. The sun, however, just peeked right around it, still baking the daisy. The daisy gave a tiny sigh.

Next, Lily snatched off her other red mitten. Now both hands felt breezy! She quickly put both mittens together, trying to make a bigger shade for her wilting sunflower. She held them up high, wobbling on her tiptoes. But the sun was a giant oven, and her two small mittens were like two tiny clouds. The sunflower drooped even lower, its face looking terribly thirsty. Lily’s hands started to ache from holding her mittens up.

Then, Lily saw her little blue toy umbrella, forgotten near the fence. A spark lit up her eyes! She raced and grabbed it. *WHOOSH!* The umbrella popped open, a perfect blue sky over her plants.

But the plants still looked thirsty. “Oh!” Lily gasped, remembering. Plants need a drink! She grabbed her tiny green watering can and gave each plant a big, cool drink.

The leaves began to perk up, standing tall and green. The sun still shone, but now they were safe under the blue umbrella, sipping their cool water. Lily’s hands, free from her hot mittens, felt light and happy as she watched her garden smile.
