In the silver mist, Auri awoke— A tiny cloud-girl, soft as smoke. “The light is gone!” she whispered small. “How will the town see night at all?”
The old Keeper sighed, his lantern low. “Kindness made the stars, long ago. When hearts grow dim, their shine will fade— Go seek one kindness, cloud-child brave.”
Auri drifted down the sleeping street. A shivering bird peeped at her feet. She cupped it close and hummed a tune— Twinkle!—a star bloomed, bright as June.
Tiny lights led up the hill, where shadows moved and all was still. The sky was dark; the sea looked deep— “Who’s keeping all the stars asleep?”
There sat Gloom, a creature gray, hugging the stars he’d hidden away. “No one was kind,” he said with a groan. “I felt so small and all alone.”
Auri’s chest felt warm and tight. She held her one remaining light. “Here,” she said, “it’s small, but bright— a gift of kindness, meant for you.”
Gloom blinked once; his tears fell bright. His heart grew warm; his hands felt light. The stars soared free; their glow spread wide— Shining across the endless sky.
The Lighthouse beamed; the sea danced gold. Auri’s scarf swirled in the morning cold. “One small kindness,” she whispered new, “Can bring the stars back—two by two.”
