A classic Aesop's fable retold, this story follows a proud crow who finds a delicious piece of cheese and a clever fox determined to trick her out of it. It's a bright and focused lesson about wit, pride, and the dangers of flattery, perfect for young readers learning about character and consequences.
One morning, a crow found a golden piece of cheese beside a picnic basket. She snatched it up and flew to a tall oak tree.
High on a branch, she placed her claws firm and looked down proudly. “Ah, what a breakfast fit for a queen,” she thought.
Below, a fox saw her. He sniffed the air—cheese! His eyes glittered. “A feast for me, if only I can get it,” he whispered.
The fox trotted beneath the tree and called, “Good morning, dazzling bird! Truly, your feathers shine brighter than silk.”
The crow tilted her head, pleased. She said nothing, for she did not wish to drop her cheese.
The fox blinked up sweetly. “Surely a voice so beautiful must match those feathers. If only I could hear you sing!”
The crow’s chest puffed with pride. Sing? Of course she could sing!
She lifted her head, opened her beak wide— and the cheese slipped right out.
"Plop!" The cheese landed in the grass. The fox snatched it quickly and grinned.
“Thank you, lovely crow,” said the fox, licking his chops. “You sing beautifully, especially when you let breakfast fall.”
The crow stared in shock, her feathers ruffled. She realized her pride had flown away with her breakfast.
The fox trotted off, tail swishing. He hummed, “Flattery feeds the foolish.”
The crow sighed. “I’ll keep my beak shut next time I’m praised.”
A breeze rustled the leaves. The other small birds chirped softly, “Lesson learned, sister crow.”
And high among the branches, the crow stayed quiet and wise— watching her reflection in the golden afternoon light, her pride now gentler, her heart a little smarter.
