A classic fable reimagined, this story follows a humble Country Mouse who visits his sophisticated Town Mouse cousin. He experiences the lavish but dangerous city life, ultimately realizing that peace and simplicity are more valuable than a feast filled with fear. It's a gentle tale contrasting rural tranquility with urban excitement and peril.
On a sunny afternoon, the Country Mouse nibbled wheat and smiled. His world was quiet—breeze, birdsong, and plenty of crumbs. Then came a polite tap-tap at the door.
“Cousin!” cried the Town Mouse, slick and shiny. “You live so plain! Come to my place. I’ll show you real feasting.” The Country Mouse blinked, curious.
He packed a crumb for courage and followed his cousin down the dusty road. Past fields, past markets, until towers brushed the clouds.
That night, they reached a grand hall glowing with candlelight. Slices of cheese! Cakes! Nuts and berries piled high! The Country Mouse gasped. “All this… every night?”
The Town Mouse grinned. “Every night and more! Eat, cousin. Taste city life.” The Country Mouse reached for a grape— when “thump!” heavy footsteps echoed.
The floor trembled. “Quick!” hissed the Town Mouse. They dove behind a candlestick. A giant dog snuffled by, nose twitching. Then came a cat’s paw—silent, sharp.
The Country Mouse clutched his crumb, heart thumping like a drum. “Do you always dine like this?” he whispered. “Shh,” said his cousin, frozen under the shadow.
Moments crawled. The humans laughed, the cat prowled. The cheese glittered, untouched. Each crack of a dish made the Country Mouse jump.
When the danger passed, the Town Mouse sighed. “See? Excitement is the spice of city life!” The Country Mouse smiled weakly. “Spice enough to lose your tail.”
They crept out toward the window. The Country Mouse looked once more at the shining plates, then at the wide, open night.
“Thank you, cousin,” he said, “but I’ll go home. A crust in peace beats a feast in fear.”
The Town Mouse tilted his head. “Really? You prefer… crumbs?” The Country Mouse nodded. “Crumbs that let me sleep.”
Back in his field, the stars blinked softly. He sat with a crumb of bread and a sip of dew. Simple, safe, enough.
Far away, the Town Mouse dodged shadows in the grand hall, his feast suddenly tasting of nothing but fear. He finally understood his cousin's choice.
For the Country Mouse, true wealth wasn’t a plate piled high, but a heart at peace.
