Story Details

High on a hill, a young shepherd boy watched his sheep nibble the grass. He sighed. “So quiet again…”

He twirled his whistle and looked down at the village. “Maybe,” he said, grinning, “I’ll make it a little exciting.”

He stood up and shouted, “Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is chasing the sheep!”

The villagers dropped their work and ran up the hill—brooms, buckets, and sticks in hand. “No wolf?” they gasped. The boy laughed so hard he fell into the grass.

The villagers frowned. “Don’t waste our time,” said the baker. They trudged back down the path.

Next day, the boy’s eyes sparkled again. He cupped his hands. “Wolf! Wolf!” he cried louder than before.

Once more, the villagers came running, panting and worried. But the field was peaceful, only sheep blinking in the sun. The boy chuckled. “You should’ve seen your faces!”

The farmers scowled. “Lie all you want, but we won’t come again.” They turned away, shaking their heads.

That night, clouds rolled over the moon. A low growl drifted from the edge of the forest.

The boy froze. Out from the tall grass crept a gray shape—real, silent, watching. “Wolf!” he gasped. “Wolf! Please, help!”

He shouted, whistled, waved his arms, but the village lights stayed still. No footsteps, no voices, just the wind answering back.

The wolf lunged toward the flock. Sheep scattered across the hill, their white wool flashing through the dark.

When dawn came, the villagers found the boy trembling among the frightened sheep. “I told the truth this time,” he whispered, tears in his eyes.

The oldest villager nodded gently. “We’ll help you, boy,” she said, “but remember—truth must sound true.” The boy hung his head, clutching his broken whistle.

From that day on, he watched his flock carefully and spoke only what was real. Above the hillside, his clear, honest whistle carried through the cool morning air—never wasted, never false again.
