Story Details

One day in the forest, Simpleton sat down to eat his lunch. An old man stepped from the trees and asked, “Will you share a bit?” “Of course,” said Simpleton, giving him half his bread and cheese.

The old man’s eyes sparkled. “You shared freely, dig under that oak and take what you find.” Simpleton dug at the roots and pulled out a shimmering golden goose.

“Pretty thing, I’ll keep you safe,” he whispered, tucking the goose under his arm. The glowing feathers lit his path through the trees. That night he stopped at an inn and laid the goose beside his bed.

Two curious innkeeper’s daughters crept close to look at the shining bird. “Just one feather,” whispered one as she reached out. Her fingers touched gold—“stick!”—and she could not pull away.

Her sister grabbed her arm to help—“stick!”—and she was stuck too. They tugged and twisted but the goose held tight. Simpleton snored softly, hearing none of it.

Morning came. “Time to go,” said Simpleton, picking up the goose. Off he marched down the road. The two sisters flapped and stumbled behind, still stuck fast.

People pointed and laughed. “Look, a parade of fools!” they cried. A farmer tried to pull the sisters free, stick! and joined the line. Then a baker rushed over, stick! and he joined as well.

The wobbly chain trailed after Simpleton like a long golden snake. He glanced back and shrugged. “You may as well come along,” he said. Sunlight danced over the goose and all the foolish faces.

In the palace, the king’s daughter had not laughed for years. “Whoever makes her laugh shall marry her,” the king declared. Just then, Simpleton’s golden goose parade stumbled into the square.

The princess blinked, then snorted once. Seeing the farmer, the baker, and the sisters all stuck together, she burst into giggles. She laughed so hard that tears rolled down her cheeks.

The king stared in amazement. “You have done what no one else could,” he told Simpleton. He kept his word, and wedding bells rang bright and clear.

At the feast, the stuck ones were finally freed. They rubbed sore hands and laughed at themselves. “Greedy fingers got us into this,” they muttered. “We’ll think before we grab next time.”

Simpleton kept the golden goose safe in the royal garden. Whenever she spread her wings, the air shone bright as dawn and the princess smiled. Everyone remembered that one kind gift in a forest had brought more joy than all the greedy grabbing in the world.
