Story Details

Barnaby the squirrel only liked blue acorns. He loved their cool, calm color. But one morning, his special blue acorns were all gone! Not one blue acorn brightened his nest. His heart thumped a frantic drum. Barnaby knew of a legend: the Great Blue Acorn. He had to find it!

He scurried to the whispering willow. "Willow, have you seen the Great Blue Acorn?" he chattered. The willow sighed. "Look for blue where green meets yellow." Barnaby looked. He saw a tiny patch of greenish-blue moss. No acorn. He felt a pang of disappointment. He scampered on.

Next, he found a chattering brook. "Brook, have you seen the Great Blue Acorn?" he squeaked. The brook giggled. "Look for blue where red meets purple." Barnaby searched. He saw a deep, purplish-blue flower. No acorn. His tail drooped a little. He bounded onward.

Then he saw an old owl. "Owl, wise owl, where is the Great Blue Acorn?" Barnaby pleaded. The owl blinked slowly. "Look for blue where the sky touches the deepest sea." Barnaby looked up. The sky was pale blue. He looked down. The pond was dark blue. And right there, shining between them, was the Great Blue Acorn! It was bigger than all his other acorns combined, and bluer than anything he had ever seen. Barnaby hugged it tight. His quest was over.
