Story Details

The New Year Letter That Was Never Sent It was New Year’s Eve when Sophie, 10 years old, found an old shoebox hidden under her brother’s bed.

Inside were dozens of unsent letters—each dated from different years. All addressed to the same person: “To My Future Self.”

Her brother, Liam, had moved to another city for work three months earlier. Since then, Sophie felt the house grow quieter, as if someone had taken a piece of sunlight away.

She opened the most recent letter. It read: “My New Year wish is simple: I hope Sophie grows brave, even when I’m not around.”

Sophie blinked hard. No one knew she’d been struggling at school—too shy to speak up, too scared to try new things.

That night, she decided to write a wish of her own. She grabbed a pencil and wrote on a small blue card: “I wish I could be brave enough to tell Liam I miss him.”

She folded it and placed it inside the shoebox. Just as she slid it under the bed, her phone buzzed.

A video call request. It was Liam. His voice crackled through the speakers, tired but warm. “Happy New Year, Soph! I know I’ve been away… Are you doing okay?”

Normally, Sophie would have said “I’m fine.” But this time—thinking of the letters, the wishes, the words he never sent—she took a breath. “I… miss you,” she whispered. “A lot.”

Liam’s eyes softened. “I miss you too. And guess what? I’m coming home next week. I didn’t want you to spend the New Year alone.”

Sophie wiped her eyes, smiling through the tears. Maybe wishes didn’t need magic stamps or envelopes. Maybe they just needed courage— the courage to finally say what your heart has been holding.

And this New Year, Sophie’s small wish found its way home.
