The red light at Elm and Fifth was a monster. It stayed red forever! Horns blared. Kids whined. Grown-ups groaned.

One Tuesday, Mr. Putter, late for his dentist, drummed his fingers on the steering wheel.

Suddenly, the red light blinked. Not a normal blink, but a zippy, zappy, up-and-down dance! Mr. Putter, a former scout, knew it! Morse code!

He scribbled on a napkin. Dot-dash-dot-dot… H-A-H-A! Then more blinks! “Why did the invisible man turn down the job offer?” The light pulsed. “He couldn’t SEE himself doing it!” A giggle escaped Mr. Putter.

The waiting cars still fumed, but Mr. Putter chuckled. He wasn’t late anymore; he was a joke decoder!

The next day, Mrs. Gable, with a car full of noisy toddlers, pulled up. The red light glowed… then began its wacky blinking.

Faster this time! Mrs. Gable, good at puzzles, watched closely.

Dot-dash-dot… “What do you call a sleeping dinosaur?” The light flashed like a disco ball. “A dino-SNORE!” The toddlers, who were just about to meltdown, stopped to listen.

Mrs. Gable, usually frazzled, actually smiled. The light hadn't changed to green, but the grumbles in her car turned into giggles.

By Friday, the whole town knew. The monster light told jokes! Chief Miller, a very serious man, waited. The light started its wild blinking.

“Why did the bicycle fall over?” Chief Miller squinted. The light flashed. “Because it was TWO-TIRED!” Even Chief Miller let out a little puff of air that sounded like a laugh.

The traffic still waited, but no one seemed to care as much. The red light at Elm and Fifth, once a grumpy beast, was now the funniest thing in town.

It still made cars wait, but now it made them wait with a smile.
