Story Details

Once upon a time, in a little house with a lovely garden, there lived a very old man named Captain Tom.

He was almost 100 years old, which is even older than your grandma and grandpa put together!

Captain Tom walked with a walking frame that went clickety-clack, clickety-clack, because his legs were tired from being a brave soldier long ago and from falling over and hurting his hip.

One spring day, when the whole world felt a bit sad and worried because lots of people were poorly, Captain Tom looked out of his window and saw the brave doctors and nurses working day and night to make everyone better.

He said to his daughter Hannah, “Those doctors and nurses are real-life superheroes. I want to help them!”

Hannah smiled and asked, “What can we do, Daddy?”

Captain Tom thought and thought. Then his eyes twinkled like stars.

“I know!” he said. “Before I turn 100 years old, I will walk 100 laps around our garden with my walking frame. That’s 100 times from the apple tree to the roses and back again. If people want to say thank you to the superheroes in the hospitals, they can send a little money to help buy blankets and medicine.”

100 laps sounded like a LOT. It was like walking all the way around ten football fields!

His grandson Ben said, “Grandpa, are you sure? That’s very far for old legs.”

Captain Tom stood up straight (well, as straight as a 99-year-old can) and said, “Little steps add up to big adventures. And tomorrow will be a good day!”

So, on a sunny April morning, wearing his smart blazer full of shiny medals, Captain Tom started. Clickety-clack, clickety-clack…

Lap 1… Lap 2… Lap 3…. The birds cheered. The flowers clapped their petals. Even the snails raced beside him (very slowly).

Every day Captain Tom went outside, even when his legs felt wobbly, even when it rained a tiny bit. He smiled and waved at neighbours watching over the fence.

People heard about the old man with the walking frame who wouldn’t give up. First ten people sent money. Then a hundred. Then thousands and thousands!

Children drew rainbow pictures and stuck them in their windows that said “Thank you, Captain Tom!”

On the news programmes all around the world, everyone watched the little garden and the brave old soldier going clickety-clack, clickety-clack.

By the time Captain Tom finished his 100th lap, his garden had turned into a magic place. The money pot that was meant to collect £1,000 had grown and grown until it held more than 33 million pounds!

That’s enough to buy millions of cups of tea and thousands of cosy blankets for the superhero nurses and doctors.

The Queen (yes, the real Queen!) sent a letter and later made him Sir Captain Tom with a sword tap on the shoulder.

But the most special thing was this: Captain Tom showed every child and grown-up in the world that you are never too small or too old to make a giant difference.

Because even the longest journey starts with one little step… and one brave heart that says, “I’m going to try anyway.”

And from that day on, whenever children felt something was too hard, they remembered the old soldier with the walking frame and the garden full of love, and they whispered to themselves: “Little steps add up to big adventures… and tomorrow will be a good day!”
