Story Details

Hello! This is Mimi the little Magpie. Mimi is building a new nest, and she needs to find all kinds of different Materials to make it strong and cozy!

Mimi looks for something Soft and fluffy for the inside of her nest. She finds a piece of Cotton! Cotton is light and squishy, making a very soft bed.

Next, Mimi needs something Hard and strong for the outside structure. She finds a stiff Stick made of Wood. Wood comes from trees and is very durable.

Mimi sees a piece of Glass on the ground. Glass is very Smooth and completely Clear. We can see right through glass, like the window in a house! But glass is fragile and can break.

Mimi gathers some Bark from a tree trunk. Bark is rough and bumpy. It is a natural material that helps keep the nest warm and protected.

Mimi finds a small, shiny Key! The key is made of Metal. Metal is strong, heavy, and often cold to the touch. It makes a clink sound when dropped.

Mimi finds a small, round Ball. The ball is made of Rubber. Rubber is Bouncy and stretchy. It is a good material for tires and toys!

Mimi finds a piece of soft Fabric (cloth). Fabric is flexible—she can bend it and fold it easily. She uses the fabric to weave into the nest for extra support.

Mimi sees some children's toys left outside. Many toys are made of Plastic. Plastic can be bent, molded into many shapes, and is usually brightly colored.

Mimi needs to clean a spot in her nest. She finds a small Sponge. The sponge is Absorbent—it soaks up water quickly!

Mimi learned that every material has different Properties. Soft materials are cozy. Hard materials are strong. Clear materials let light through.

Mimi has gathered all her materials! Her nest will be strong with wood, soft with cotton, and cozy with fabric. The world is full of wonderful materials!
