Mr. Pérez, the new janitor, discovers that the flickering lights of the gloomy town hall magically brighten with laughter. He orchestrates a 'joke party' to bring joy and light to every corner of the building.

Story Details

The town hall lights flickered. *Zzzzt!* went the big chandelier.

Mr. Pérez, the new janitor, sighed. The lights always dimmed. Always! The old town hall felt gloomy.

“These lights are spooky,” said Ms. Clara, the clerk. “They scare my papers!”

Mr. Pérez noticed something. The lights got bright when the comedy club next door ended.

Ha-ha-ha!* Loud laughs filled the air. Then, the town hall lights glowed bright. “Aha!” he thought. “Laughter!”

First, Mr. Pérez told a funny joke. “Why did the scarecrow win an award? Because he was outstanding in his field!” Ms. Clara giggled.

*Tee-hee-hee!* The small desk lamp pulsed, a little brighter.

Next, he found Mr. Henderson, the stern mayor. “Mr. Mayor, tell Ms. Clara your silliest joke!” Mr. Henderson grumbled.

But then he said, “What do you call a sleeping bull? A bulldozer!” Ms. Clara snorted with laughter.

*Pfft-ha-ha!* The big overhead light in the main office stopped flickering. It glowed steady.

Then, Mr. Pérez gathered everyone in the big hall. “Time for a joke party!” he announced. Mr. Schmidt, the quiet librarian, told a riddle.

“What has an eye but cannot see?” Everyone guessed. “A needle!” cried little Timmy. Everyone clapped and cheered.

*Yay!* The huge chandelier in the main hall twinkled like a thousand stars. It stopped its *zzzzt!* sound.

“More jokes!” Mr. Pérez urged. Mrs. Gable, who always looked worried, told a story about a dancing dog.

Mr. Pérez clapped his hands. *Clap-clap-clap!* All the town hall lights, from the basement to the roof, shone with a happy, steady glow.

The old wires hummed a joyful tune. Mr. Pérez smiled. Laughter was the best lightbulb!
