Mrs. Albright frowned. A bright green weed, with a sassy yellow flower, poked up by her door.

It was an insult! She grabbed it, yanked it hard. *Pop!* It came out. “Hah!” she huffed, wiping her hands.

The next morning, the weed was back. Taller, brighter, with two yellow flowers! Mrs. Albright’s face turned red.

“Oh, no you don’t!” she growled. She got her spray bottle, filled with the strongest stuff.

*Sppppt! Sppppt!* The weed glistened with poison. She stomped inside, victorious.

But the next day, oh, the horror! The weed stood proud, three golden flowers nodding in the breeze.

It looked stronger than ever! Mrs. Albright’s jaw dropped. She fetched her biggest garden shears, their blades gleaming.

*Snip! Snip! Snip!* She cut it down to the dirt. “That’ll teach you!” she declared, her voice trembling just a little.

The following morning, four dazzling flowers greeted her at the doorstep.

The weed now towered over her welcome mat, a vibrant, leafy giant.

Mrs. Albright stood still. She looked at the weed, then at her own shaking hands.

She slumped onto her porch swing. “Fine,” she whispered. “You win.”

She looked at the weed again. It truly was quite beautiful. The yellow flowers winked at her.

A tiny ladybug crawled on a leaf. Mrs. Albright took a deep breath. It wasn’t fighting her. It was just growing.

And suddenly, the tightness in her chest, the grumpy knot in her stomach, felt a little bit looser.

The weed swayed gently, a bright, cheerful soldier, guarding her door.

And for the first time in a long time, Mrs. Albright smiled.
