Barnaby and the Moon Rock Moss
Barnaby the grumpy gnome is horrified to find a tiny patch of moss on his prized moon rock. Despite his best efforts to remove it, the moss thrives, and Barnaby discovers a new appreciation for the unexpected beauty that can transform even the most perfect things.
Barnaby the gnome squinted, his sideways beard twitching. Disaster! A fuzzy green spot, no bigger than a ladybug’s eye, clung to his prized moon rock. His moon rock! The shiniest, smoothest, most perfectly round rock in his whole super-organized collection. Barnaby, usually grumpy as a storm cloud, felt a rumble in his tiny gnome tummy. Moss! On his *moon* rock!
First, he tried to shoo it. "Shoo, you little green intruder!" he puffed, waving a miniature dandelion stem. The moss just snuggled deeper. Not a wiggle. Barnaby huffed. His scowl deepened. He loved his rocks more than anything, each one shiny and clean, sorted by sparkle and size.
Next, Barnaby tried a gentle breeze. He found a particularly fluffy dandy-lion seed head and blew. Pffft! A tiny puff of air tickled the moss. The moss, instead of flying away, seemed to stretch a little, like it was enjoying a yawn. Barnaby’s beard practically stood on end. This was getting serious.
Then, he thought of sunshine. "Aha!" he declared, dragging the moon rock (and its unwelcome green guest) to a sunbeam peeking through the toadstool roof. He nudged the rock just so, letting the warm light kiss the moss. He watched, eyes wide. The moss didn't disappear. Instead, it seemed to glow, a brighter, livelier green. A tiny, new leaf unfurled. Barnaby’s scowl softened a fraction. He leaned closer.
He watched the sunbeam crawl across the floor. He watched the tiny moss patch for an hour, then two. He even hummed a little tune, a very quiet, not-grumpy tune. And then, right next to the original moss, a brand-new, even tinier patch of green appeared, sparkling like a jewel. It looked… pretty. His moon rock, once just shiny, now held a secret garden. Barnaby’s lips curved just a little. His special rock was even *more* special.
