Story Details

I am looking at a very tall, colorful triangle. It looks like a mountain! This is the Food Pyramid. It shows us what to eat to grow tall and stay strong. Let’s start at the bottom and climb to the top.

I look at the wide bottom of the mountain. It is brown and yellow. I see bread, rice, and noodles. These foods give me energy to run, jump, and play all day long. They are like fuel for a fast car!

I move up to the next level. One side is bright green. I see broccoli, carrots, and spinach. These vegetables have "super vitamins." They keep my skin healthy and my eyes bright so I can see everything.

Right next to the vegetables, I see bright colors: red, orange, and purple. I see apples, bananas, and grapes. They are nature’s candy! They help my body fight off mean germs so I don't get sick.

I climb higher. I see a blue section. It is full of milk, cheese, and yogurt. These foods have calcium. I imagine my bones and teeth getting harder and stronger every time I drink a glass of milk.

On the other side of the middle level, I see purple and red. There are eggs, fish, and chicken. These foods help my muscles grow. If I want to lift heavy toys, I need these "Muscle Builders."

I see small brown shapes too. They are beans and nuts. They are small but very powerful! They help my brain think fast and remember my ABCs.

I reach the very top of the mountain. It is very small. Here, I see butter, oil, and sweets. There is not much room here. That means I should only eat a tiny bit of these every day.

I look beside the mountain. I see a big, clear waterfall. It is water! I need to drink many glasses of water every day to keep my body cool and clean inside. Gulp, gulp, gulp!

I look at my dinner plate. I try to make it look like the mountain. I put some brown rice, a lot of green broccoli, and some grilled chicken. It looks like a beautiful, healthy rainbow!

I watch a child eat this healthy meal. After eating, the child has a big smile. Their tummy feels happy, not too heavy and not too light. They have the energy to go outside and play.

I look at the Food Pyramid one last time. It is a map to help me grow. When I choose good food, I am taking care of my body. Being healthy is a great adventure!
