Barnaby's Missing Socks
Barnaby the ogre loves to eat socks, but when his favorite socks mysteriously disappear, he embarks on a quest to find them, only to discover a puzzling new magic at play. A charming story about an unusual ogre learning a surprising lesson about nature.
Barnaby the ogre grumbled. His tummy rumbled. But not for bugs or mud pie! Oh no, Barnaby only ate socks. Soft, chewy, delightful socks.
He stomped to his sock pile. It was… smaller! “Where are my yummy socks?” he bellowed. His favorite fuzzy red sock was gone! Barnaby’s rocky heart gave a tiny shudder.
He sniffed the air, then followed a faint, stinky scent. It led him to a gurgling creek.
“My socks!” he roared. There, tangled in a willow branch, was a single, drippy, blue sock. It looked sad. Barnaby pulled it out, but it felt… flat. And wet.
“This is NOT crunchy!” he complained, tossing it on a warm rock.
Next, his nose twitched. The scent was stronger near a bubbly puddle, shimmering in the sun. “Aha!” he declared. He saw his bright yellow argyle sock, half-submerged, looking very thin. As he watched, a tiny bubble popped right where the sock was. More of the puddle disappeared! His yellow sock was getting smaller!
Barnaby poked it. It felt like… air. His heart throbbed a little faster. He scooped up a handful of water, which warmed quickly in his big hand.
Barnaby trudged to a wide, flat stone where the sun beat down extra hard. His grumbly tummy flipped. There, on the hot stone, was a faint, blue outline. A ghost of his very best blue sock! It was gone! Only a damp spot remained.
The sun was stealing his socks! It was making them into… invisible air! Barnaby felt a strange, floaty feeling in his chest. His beloved blue sock was now everywhere, but nowhere he could eat. His grumpy face softened just a tiny bit.
The sun had taken his socks, but it had also shown him a new, puzzling magic.
