Story Details

Hello! This is Leo. Today, Leo is putting on his warmest coat and boots. He is traveling to the Arctic, the land of ice and snow at the very top of the world!

First, Leo sees a Polar Bear. Polar bears have thick white Fur that keeps them warm and helps them hide in the snow. They are amazing swimmers and love to eat fish!

In the icy water, Leo spots a Narwhal. The narwhal is called the "Unicorn of the Sea" because it has a long, spiraled tooth that looks like a horn. They swim deep under the ice.

Leo sees a small Arctic Fox running quickly. In the winter, its fur is white like snow. In the summer, its fur turns brown to match the rocks. This is called Camouflage!

On a big piece of ice, Leo finds a Walrus. Walruses have two long Tusks made of ivory and lots of whiskers. They use their tusks to help them pull their heavy bodies out of the water.

Leo looks up and sees a Snowy Owl flying silently. Its feathers are white with small black spots. It has very large Yellow Eyes that help it see tiny movements in the snow from far away.

Leo meets a herd of Reindeer. Both boy and girl reindeer grow large Antlers on their heads. They use their wide hooves to dig through the snow to find plants to eat.

At night, Leo looks at the sky and sees green and purple lights dancing. These are the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). It looks like magic in the sky!

Leo learns about the Igloo. An igloo is a house made of blocks of Ice. Even though it is made of ice, it stays warm and cozy inside, protecting people from the freezing wind.

How do whales and seals stay warm in the freezing water? They have a thick layer of fat called Blubber. It acts like a warm blanket under their skin!

Leo learns that the Arctic is getting warmer and the ice is Melting. We must take care of our planet so that the polar bears and narwhals have a safe and cold home to live in.

What a chilly adventure! Leo is back home, drinking a cup of hot cocoa. He will never forget the beautiful land of ice. Which Arctic animal do you think is the coolest?
