Join Mai the spelunker on an exciting underground adventure as she explores a mysterious cave, discovering fascinating formations, ancient paintings, nocturnal animals, and sparkling crystals.
Hello! This is Mai. Today, Mai is a Spelunker—that is a person who explores caves! She has her helmet and a bright flashlight ready to see what is hidden underground.
As Mai walks inside, the air feels Cool and damp. Caves are natural underground spaces. Some are small, but some are as big as a football stadium! Mai turns on her light to see the walls.
Mai looks up and sees stone "icicles" hanging down. These are Stalactites. They form very slowly over hundreds of years as water drips from the ceiling, leaving tiny bits of Mineral behind.
On the floor, Mai sees stone pillars growing up. These are Stalagmites. When water drips from a stalactite onto the floor, it builds up over time. Remember: Stalactites hang Tight to the ceiling, and Stalagmites Might reach the top!
Mai finds a wall with drawings of horses and bison. These are Cave Paintings! Thousands of years ago, early humans lived in caves and used natural colors to tell Stories on the stone walls.
Mai hears a tiny squeak. High above, she sees many Bats hanging upside down. Bats love caves because they are dark and safe. They sleep during the day and fly out at night to eat Insects.
Mai hears the sound of rushing water. She finds an Underground River! Water carved out this cave over millions of years. Some caves even have hidden Waterfalls that no one sees from the outside.
Mai points her light at a rock and it Sparkles! Some caves are filled with beautiful crystals made of salt or gypsum. They look like giant diamonds growing out of the walls.
In the cave water, Mai spots a tiny fish. It is white and has no eyes! Because it is always dark, some cave animals are Blind. They use their sense of smell and touch to find food in the water.
Mai shouts "Hello!" and the cave shouts back, "Hello... hello... hello..." This is an Echo. The sound waves bounce off the hard stone walls and come back to her ears.
Mai learns that caves are very Fragile. We should never touch the stalactites because the oil from our hands can stop them from growing. We must keep caves clean and quiet for the animals.
Mai emerges from the cave and blinks in the bright Sunlight. What a mysterious world exists right under our feet! Would you like to explore a cave one day?
