Story Details

Hello! This is Mai. She is very curious today. She is pointing to her head and wondering: "What is happening inside my mind?" She is going to learn about the Brain!

The brain is the Command Center of the body. It is a soft, gray organ protected by the hard bone of the Skull. It works 24 hours a day, even when Mai is fast asleep!

How does the brain talk to the body? It uses Neurons! Neurons are tiny cells that send electrical signals like lightning. If Mai wants to wiggle her toe, her brain sends a message down her Nerves at super speed.

The brain has two halves. The Left Side helps Mai with math, logic, and speaking. The Right Side helps her with art, music, and imagination. They work together to make Mai who she is!

Mai's brain has a place called the Hippocampus. It acts like a Library for her memories. It stores the smell of cookies, the name of her best friend, and everything she learned at school today.

The brain also controls Emotions. A small part called the Amygdala helps Mai feel happy, sad, or scared. It tells her when to smile and when to be careful.

All of Mai's Senses send information to her brain. Her eyes see a dog, her ears hear it bark, and her brain puts it all together to say: "Look! A happy puppy!"

At the back of the brain is the Cerebellum. This part helps Mai keep her Balance. It allows her to ride a bicycle or stand on one leg without falling over.

To keep her brain healthy, Mai eats Brain Food. Walnuts, berries, and fish help her brain stay sharp. Drinking plenty of Water is also very important for her thinking power.

When Mai sleeps, her brain doesn't stop. It cleans up the 'trash' from the day and organizes all the new things she learned. Sleep is like a charger for her brain's battery!

Every time Mai learns a new skill, like playing the piano, her brain grows Stronger. The more she practices, the thicker the connections between her neurons become. Her brain is always growing!

Mai is so happy! Her brain is her best tool. It allows her to dream, to create, and to explore the world. What is your brain thinking about right now?
