Story Details

Hello! This is Leo. Today, Leo is traveling to a very special forest in California. He is going to visit the Giant Redwoods. These are the tallest living things on our whole planet!

Redwood trees can grow over 100 meters tall! That is taller than the Statue of Liberty or a big city building. Leo has to tilt his head all the way back just to see the lowest branches.

Redwoods are not just tall; they are very Old. Some of these trees have been growing for over 2,000 years! They were just tiny seeds back when the Ancient Romans were building their empire.

Leo touches the bark. It feels soft and "fuzzy." The bark can be 30 centimeters thick! It contains a special juice called tannin that protects the tree from bugs and even from Forest Fires.

How do the trees get water all the way to the top? They drink the Fog! Redwoods live near the ocean. Their needles catch the tiny drops of water in the misty air, and the water drips down to their roots.

You might think deep trees have deep roots, but Redwoods have Shallow Roots. Their roots only go down about 2 meters, but they spread out very wide and Hold Hands with the roots of other trees to stay standing.

High up in the branches, there is a whole different world. Leo learns that soil collects on the high branches, and other plants and even Salamanders live 80 meters in the air without ever touching the ground!

The biggest trees come from the tiniest things. A Redwood Cone is only the size of an olive, and the seeds inside are as small as a grain of salt. It is a miracle of nature!

When a giant tree falls, it becomes a Nurse Log. The fallen tree provides a home and food for new baby trees, mushrooms, and ferns to grow. In the forest, nothing is ever wasted.

Redwoods are superheroes for the Earth. They breathe in a lot of Carbon Dioxide (the bad air) and turn it into clean Oxygen for us. They help keep our planet cool and healthy.

Leo learns that many Redwoods were cut down in the past. Now, we have National Parks to protect them. We must make sure these ancient giants stay safe for children to see in the future.

Leo sits quietly among the giants. He feels very small but very lucky. The forest is a place of peace and wonder. Would you like to walk among the tallest trees in the world?
