Story Details

Hello! This is Mai. Today, she is putting on her shiny silver spacesuit. She is boarding her rocket to explore the Solar System! There are eight planets and one big star to visit.

At the center of everything is the Sun. It is a giant ball of burning gas. The Sun is so big that one million Earths could fit inside it! It gives us the Light and Heat we need to live.

First, Mai sees Mercury, the smallest planet. It is very close to the sun and moves very fast! Next is Venus. It is the hottest planet because its thick clouds trap the heat like a blanket.

The third planet is Earth, our home! From space, it looks like a beautiful blue marble. It is the only planet we know that has liquid Water and Life. It is just the right temperature for us!

Next is Mars, the Red Planet. It is covered in red dust and has the biggest volcano in the whole solar system! Scientists send Robots called rovers to Mars to see if anyone lived there a long time ago.

Mai reaches Jupiter, the biggest planet of all. It is a "Gas Giant," which means it doesn't have a hard ground to stand on. It has a famous Great Red Spot, which is actually a storm that has lasted for hundreds of years!

Now Mai sees Saturn. Saturn is famous for its spectacular Rings. These rings are not solid; they are made of billions of pieces of Ice and Rock spinning around the planet.

Mai travels to the edge of the solar system. Uranus is a cold "Ice Giant" that spins on its side. Neptune is a beautiful dark blue color and has the fastest Winds in space!

Mai sees our Moon circling Earth. But other planets have moons too! Jupiter has over 90 moons! There are also Asteroids (big rocks) and Comets (snowy space balls) flying around.

Why don't the planets fly away? It's because of Gravity. The Sun's gravity is like an invisible string that keeps all the planets spinning in their Orbits. It keeps the whole solar system organized!

Mai looks further out. Our solar system is just one small part of the Milky Way. Our galaxy has billions of other stars and planets. Space is so big that we are still discovering new things every day!

Mai’s rocket lands safely back home. She loved seeing the giants and the rings, but she is happy to be back on Earth. Which planet would you like to visit in your dreams?
