Story Details

I am standing in a world that looks like a giant bowl of vanilla ice cream. There are no trees, no colorful flowers, and no green grass. Everything is bright, cold, and white. In the middle of this frozen world, a massive polar bear is walking across the ice.

I look at the bear's thick coat. It matches the snow perfectly! This is a great secret for hiding. When the bear is hunting for a snack, it looks just like a big pile of snow moving in the wind. But as I get closer, I realize my eyes are playing a trick on me.

I use my magic zoom-lens to look through the bear's thick fur. I see something shocking! Underneath all that "white" hair, the polar bear’s skin is actually Black. It is as dark as a piece of coal or a stormy night.

Why would a bear in the snow have black skin? I remember a secret about colors: dark colors love to soak up the sun! Even though it is freezing outside, the bear's black skin acts like a sponge, drinking in every tiny bit of warmth from the sun to keep the bear cozy and warm.

Now, I look even closer at a single hair from the bear's coat. I discover the biggest secret of all: The hair is not white. It is actually clear and hollow, just like a tiny drinking straw made of glass! It has no color at all.

If the hair is clear, why does the bear look white? I watch a beam of sunlight hit the bear. Because the hairs are hollow and bumpy, they scatter the light in every direction. It is just like the ocean foam or the clouds we studied—when light bounces around like that, our eyes see "White."

I notice the bear has two layers of fur. There is a soft, fuzzy layer close to the skin and a longer, coarser layer on the outside. This "double-coat" traps a layer of warm air right next to the bear's body, just like you wearing two sweaters on a cold day.

The polar bear decides to go for a swim in the freezing ocean. When it jumps out, it gives a big shake—Brrrrr!—and almost all the water flies off. The bear’s fur is covered in a special oil that makes it waterproof. This is a life-saving secret because wet fur would make the bear too cold.

Even with its "glass" hair and black skin, the bear needs more help to stay warm. Under its skin, it has a thick layer of fat called Blubber. This blubber is like a heavy, warm blanket that stays with the bear wherever it goes, even in the coldest water.

I look at the bear's giant paws. They are as big as dinner plates! They have hair on the bottom and tiny bumps that act like "non-slip" shoes. This stops the bear from sliding on the ice and helps it walk on top of the soft snow without sinking in.

I watch the bear curl up for a nap in a snowbank. It covers its black nose with its white-looking paw. This is another secret! Its nose is the only part that might give its hiding spot away, so it covers it up to become completely invisible in the snow.

I leave the Arctic and look back at the "white" bear one last time. It is amazing to think that the King of the North is actually a black bear wearing a coat of clear glass straws. Nature uses the magic of light to create the perfect disguise for the coldest place on Earth.
