Hello! This is Leo. Today, Leo is traveling back 1,000 years to the cold lands of the North. He is meeting the Vikings, famous explorers, sailors, and craftsmen who lived in a land called Scandinavia!
The Vikings were famous for their Longships. These boats were thin and fast. They had a dragon’s head carved on the front to scare away sea monsters! Because they were flat on the bottom, they could sail in deep oceans and shallow rivers.
Leo learns a secret: Vikings did not wear helmets with horns! That is just a story in movies. Real Viking helmets were made of strong iron and were smooth or had a "spectacle" guard to protect the eyes and nose.
Vikings were not just warriors; they were great Artists. They loved to carve beautiful patterns of snakes and wolves into wood, bone, and jewelry. They made strong swords and beautiful brooches out of silver and gold.
The Vikings had a special alphabet called Runes. The letters were made of straight lines so they could be easily carved into hard stone or wood. Leo tries to write his name using these pointy "Futhark" letters!
Leo visits a Longhouse. It is a very long building made of wood and stone with a roof covered in grass (sod). Inside, there is a big fire in the middle for cooking and keeping everyone warm during the cold winter.
What did Vikings eat? They loved Stew! They ate lots of fish, meat, and porridge. They also ate "hard tack" bread and dried fish that could stay good for a long time on their ships. They used honey to make things sweet.
Vikings were the first Europeans to reach North America! Long before other explorers, a Viking named Leif Erikson sailed across the dark Atlantic Ocean and found a new land he called "Vinland" because of its grapes.
At night, Leo listens to stories about Norse Gods. He hears about Odin the wise, and Thor, the god of thunder who carried a magic hammer called Mjölnir. They believed a rainbow bridge called Bifröst connected their world to the gods.
Vikings traveled very far to Trade. They sailed to far-off places like Constantinople and Baghdad. They traded their furs and amber for beautiful silk, spices, and colorful glass beads.
Vikings loved to have fun too! Leo plays a board game called Hnefatafl, which is like Viking chess. They also loved skiing, ice skating with bone skates, and telling long poems called Sagas.
Leo has learned that the Vikings were much more than just raiders; they were brave families and clever inventors. He picks up a round wooden shield and says, "Skál!" (That means Cheers!).
Leo, a young lion cub, dreams of Sunfield, a golden meadow his mother describes. When separated from his mother and moved to another zoo, Leo finds a new friend, Glint, a spark of light that guides him on an adventurous escape back to Sunfield and a heartwarming reunion.
