If the rocket launched a second too early or a second too late, the astronaut might get lost in the dark forever. The scientists were nervous. They needed someone who could calculate the exact path—the Trajectory—through the stars. Katherine stepped up. This was her second secret: Fearless Precision. She knew that if her math was perfect, the astronaut would be safe.
When it was time for John Glenn, a famous astronaut, to fly around the Earth, NASA used a giant electronic computer for the first time to figure out his path. But John Glenn was worried.
