Mai visits the Tower of London, a historic fortress in England with 1,000 years of history. She learns about its past as a palace, prison, and zoo, meets the Beefeaters, sees the Crown Jewels, and discovers the mysteries of the Ravens and the Princes in the Tower.
Hello! This is Mai. Today, Mai is standing on the banks of the River Thames in England. She is visiting the Tower of London, a massive castle with white stone walls that has stood for nearly 1,000 years. It has been a palace, a prison, and even a zoo!
The tower was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. The central building is called the White Tower. It was designed to be so big and strong that it would scare anyone who tried to attack the city. Its walls are 15 feet thick!
Mai meets the Yeoman Warders, also known as "Beefeaters." They wear famous red and gold uniforms and have guarded the tower for centuries. They are the experts who know every secret hidden within the castle’s dark corners.
One of the most famous secrets involves the Ravens. Legend says that if the six ravens ever leave the Tower, the kingdom will fall. Because of this, the "Ravenmaster" takes very good care of these big, clever black birds.
Mai visits the Crown Jewels. This is the most famous treasure in the world! Inside a high-security vault, she sees golden crowns, sparkling scepters, and the "First Star of Africa"—one of the largest diamonds ever found.
The Tower has a dark side, too. It was used as a Prison for people who made the King or Queen angry. Mai sees "Traitors' Gate," a water entrance where prisoners were brought in by boat, never knowing if they would ever leave.
Mai looks at the Armoury. Inside the White Tower, there are rows of shining suits of armor. Some were made for giant kings, and some were made for young princes. There is even a suit of armor made for a royal horse!
Did you know the Tower was once a Royal Menagerie? Long ago, kings kept exotic animals there, like lions, tigers, and even a polar bear that used to swim in the river to catch fish! Today, stone statues of these animals remind us of the old zoo.
Mai hears about the Princes in the Tower. This is one of history's greatest mysteries. Two young princes disappeared from the castle hundreds of years ago, and many people believe their uncle, King Richard III, kept them there to take the throne.
At night, a special tradition happens called the Ceremony of the Keys. For 700 years, the Chief Warden has locked the main gates and shouted, "God preserve Queen Elizabeth!" (or King Charles). It is the oldest military ceremony in the world.
Mai explores the Wakefield Tower, where the King’s private rooms were located. Unlike the cold prison cells, these rooms were filled with colorful rugs, warm fires, and beautiful paintings to make the King feel at home.
Mai’s tour of the fortress is finished. She has learned that the Tower is not just a building; it is a giant History Book made of stone. If you lived in a castle, would you spend your time guarding the treasure or feeding the ravens?
