Mai and the Stone Dragon
Join Mai on an exciting adventure to the Great Wall of China! Discover its amazing history, how it was built, its purpose, and fascinating facts like the 'secret ingredient' in its bricks. A perfect read for young explorers curious about one of the world's greatest wonders.
Hello! This is Mai. Today, Mai is standing on top of a high mountain ridge in China. Stretching out before her like a giant, sleeping dragon is the Great Wall of China. It is the longest structure ever built by humans, winding across mountains, deserts, and grasslands for thousands of miles!
Mai learns that the wall wasn't built all at once. It was started over 2,300 years ago! Different emperors added pieces to the wall at different times to protect their land. The most famous parts were built during the Ming Dynasty using strong bricks and stone.
The main reason for the wall was Defense. Long ago, ancient China wanted to protect its people from invaders from the north. The wall acted like a giant shield, making it very difficult for enemy soldiers and horses to cross into the kingdom.
Mai notices big towers every few hundred meters. These are Watchtowers. Soldiers lived inside these towers to keep a look out. If they saw an enemy coming, they would use smoke signals during the day and fire at night to send a message across the wall very quickly.
How was it built? Mai is amazed to learn that millions of people worked on the wall, including soldiers, farmers, and even prisoners. They had to carry heavy stones up steep mountains by hand. It was very hard work, and the wall is often called the "longest cemetery on Earth."
Mai looks closely at the Bricks. In some places, the workers used a very special "secret ingredient" to hold the bricks together: Sticky Rice! They mixed rice flour with lime to create a super-strong glue that has kept the wall standing for hundreds of years.
The wall is not just one straight line. It has many branches, side walls, and even natural barriers like high cliffs and deep rivers. If you put all the pieces of the Great Wall together, it would measure over 13,000 miles long!
Mai learns about the Silk Road. The Great Wall also helped protect traders who were carrying expensive silk, tea, and spices to other countries. The wall made the trade routes safer, helping China become a very wealthy and successful nation.
Is it true you can see the wall from Space? Mai finds out that this is actually a myth! Even though the wall is very long, it is quite narrow and the same color as the mountains. Astronauts say it is very hard to see with the naked eye from the moon.
Mai visits a part of the wall called "The First Pass Under Heaven." This is where the wall meets the Bohai Sea. It looks like the head of the dragon is taking a drink of water from the ocean! It is a beautiful and peaceful place.
Today, the Great Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Millions of people from all over the world visit it every year. While some parts have crumbled into dust, other parts have been carefully repaired so we can still walk on them today.
Mai’s mountain adventure is finished. She has learned that the Great Wall is a symbol of the strength and hard work of the Chinese people. It is a bridge between the past and the present. If you were a guard on the Great Wall, would you prefer to stay in the desert or the snowy mountains?
