Mai and the Backyard Camping Night
Join Mai and her family on an exciting backyard 'staycation' camping adventure! From setting up the tent and flashlight safaris to campfire stories and star-gazing, Mai discovers the magic and wonder of nature right outside her door.
Hello! This is Mai. Today, Mai is not sleeping in her bedroom. Instead, she is in the middle of the soft green grass in her own backyard! Her family has decided to go on a "Staycation". They are setting up a big orange tent right under the old mango tree.
The first task is Setting Up Camp. Mai helps her dad stretch out the tent poles. It is like building a giant puzzle made of fabric and metal. She learns that you have to "stake" the tent into the ground so it doesn't blow away if the wind decides to play a game of tag!
Next, Mai works on the Sleeping Zone. She drags out thick sleeping bags and her fluffiest pillows from the house. She learns that even though they are outside, they can make the tent feel just as "cozy" as a real bedroom. She lays a soft rug on the floor to keep her toes warm.
As the sun disappears, it is time for a Flashlight Safari. Mai and her friend Leo turn on their torches and walk around the garden. Everything looks different at night! They see the glowing eyes of a tiny toad and follow the silver trail of a slow-moving snail.
Dinner is served on a picnic blanket! They eat Campfire Sandwiches and crunchy apples. Mai realizes that food tastes much better when you are sitting under the stars. They don't use a television or tablets; instead, they talk and laugh as a family.
Leo brings out his guitar for a Sing-Along. They sing happy songs about campfires and friendship. Mai learns that you don't need a big stage to make music. The rhythm of the guitar and the chirping of the crickets make the perfect "Backyard Orchestra."
Next, they have a Star-Counting Contest. Mai lies on her back and looks up. Without the bright lights of the city, she can see thousands of tiny diamonds in the sky. She learns that the stars are always there, but we have to be quiet and dark to see them clearly.
Suddenly, they hear a strange Whoo-whoo sound. It’s an Owl! Mai is a little bit nervous at first, but her mom explains that the owl is just saying hello. Mai learns that the night is full of "Nature’s Neighbors" who wake up just as we are going to sleep.
It is time for Storytelling. They all huddle inside the tent with one small lantern. Mai’s dad tells a funny story about a brave squirrel. Mai realizes that stories told in a tent feel much more magical and exciting than stories told on a sofa.
Before sleep, they have a Shadow Theater on the tent walls. Using their hands and the lantern, they make shadows of rabbits and birds. They are practicing their Creativity by turning simple light and shapes into a whole world of characters.
Mai brushes her teeth using a cup of water at the edge of the porch. She looks at her house—it looks so big and quiet from the outside! She feels like a Real Explorer who is far away in a jungle, even though she is only a few meters from her kitchen.
Finally, everyone zips up the tent doors. Mai crawls into her sleeping bag. The air is cool and fresh, and the ground feels firm beneath her. She learns that Nature’s Bedtime is very peaceful. She falls asleep to the sound of the wind whispering through the leaves.
The sun wakes Mai up early the next morning. The grass is wet with dew, and the birds are singing loudly. Mai feels refreshed and happy. She realizes that an adventure can happen anywhere, even in your own backyard.
