Mai’s Great Neighborhood Cookie Sale
Mai decides to host a cookie sale to raise money for new library books. With her friend Leo, she learns about business planning, baking, marketing, teamwork, and customer service, all while making a difference in her community.
Hello! This is Mai. Today, Mai’s kitchen is a very busy place. She has a big idea: she wants to raise money to buy new books for the local library. To do this, she is hosting her very first Neighborhood Cookie Sale!
First, Mai creates a Business Plan. She sits down with a notebook and decides how many cookies she needs to bake and what the price should be. She learns that being a "boss" means thinking ahead and being organized before the fun part starts.
Next is the Baking Marathon. Mai and her friend Leo spend the whole morning mixing dough. They make chocolate chip, peanut butter, and oatmeal cookies. Mai learns that Quality Control is important—every cookie should look delicious and smell wonderful!
While the cookies cool, it is time for Marketing. Mai takes large pieces of cardboard and bright markers to make "Cookie Sale" signs. She uses big, bold letters and draws happy faces. She learns that to sell something, you have to let people know where you are!
Mai and Leo set up a decorated Table on the sidewalk in front of her house. They use a colorful tablecloth and arrange the cookies on pretty plates. Presentation is key! They want their shop to look inviting and friendly to everyone walking by.
The first customer arrives! It is Mr. Tan, the neighbor from down the street. Mai greets him with a big smile and says, "Welcome to our sale!" She is practicing her Communication Skills and learning how to be polite and helpful to adults.
Mr. Tan buys three cookies. Mai has to calculate the Change. She carefully counts the coins back into his hand. "One, two, and fifty cents." She is learning that math is very useful in the real world, especially when you are running a small business.
Suddenly, a big group of kids from the park arrives. Things get very busy! Mai and Leo have to Work as a Team. Leo bags the cookies while Mai handles the money. They learn that by helping each other, they can serve their customers much faster.
One little boy can't decide which cookie he wants. Mai offers him a Small Sample of the oatmeal cookie. "It's my favorite!" she says. The boy tastes it, smiles, and buys a whole bag. Mai learns that being kind and sharing can help people make a choice.
By the afternoon, the plates are nearly empty. Mai looks at her Collection Jar. It is getting heavy with coins and bills! She feels a sense of Achievement because her hard work is turning into real help for the library books she loves.
At the end of the day, they have one cookie left. Instead of selling it, Mai and Leo decide to split it and eat it themselves as a Celebration Snack. They talk about how much fun they had and how they can't wait to give the money to the librarian.
The sale is finished, and they help Tidy Up the sidewalk. Mai learns that being a good neighbor means leaving the street just as clean as they found it. She packs up the empty trays and heads inside with a tired but very happy heart.
Mai counts the final total and realizes they raised enough for ten brand-new books! She realizes that even a small child can make a Big Difference in their community. If you had a stand on your street, what would you like to sell to help your friends?
