Hello! This is Mai. Today, the kitchen smells like vanilla and sugar. Mai is wearing a small white apron with a yellow flower. "Can I help you, Mom?" asks Mai. Mom smiles and gives Mai a big wooden spoon. It is Baking Time!

First, they look at the Recipe. Mai learns about Ingredients. They need flour, eggs, butter, and milk. Mai helps Mom count the eggs. "One, two, and three!" says Mai carefully. She knows that every ingredient is important.

Next, Mai helps pour the Flour. She learns about Dust. The flour is white and soft like snow. Poof! A little bit of flour gets on Mai’s nose. She looks in the mirror and laughs. She looks like a little white ghost!

Now, it is time to Crack the Eggs. She learns about Gentleness. Mom shows Mai how to tap the egg softly. Tap-tap-crack! The yellow yolk falls into the bowl. Mai is very careful not to drop any shells.

Suddenly, Mai gets to use the Mixer. She learns about Whirling. The mixer goes Whirrr-whirrr! The butter and sugar turn into a fluffy cream. Mai holds the bowl tight so it doesn't dance away on the table.

Next, Mai adds the Chocolate Chips. She learns about Stirring. She uses her wooden spoon to fold the sweet brown chips into the batter. "Round and round we go," sings Mai. The batter looks delicious.

Now, they put the batter into Cups. She learns about Portions. Mai uses a big scoop to put the mix into paper liners. She tries to make sure every cupcake is the same size. "Small cakes for small hands," says Mom.

Suddenly, Mom opens the Oven. She learns about Heat. The oven is very hot, so Mai stays back. She watches Mom put the tray inside. "Now we wait for the magic to happen," whispers Mai.

Next, the kitchen starts to Smell Sweet. She learns about Patience. Mai wants to eat the cakes now, but she knows they need time to grow big and brown. She cleans the table while she waits.

Now, the cupcakes are Ready. She learns about Cooling. They are hot and golden. Mom puts them on a wire rack. Mai blows on them: Whoosh-whoosh! She is waiting for them to be safe to touch.

Then, Mai starts the Decorating. She learns about Colors. She puts pink frosting and rainbow sprinkles on top. Each cupcake looks like a tiny, sweet crown. Mai thinks they are the most beautiful cakes ever.

Finally, Mai and Mom have a Taste Test. She learns about Success. The cake is soft and the chocolate is melty. "We made a great team, Mai!" says Mom. Mai feels very proud of her hard work.

Mai’s baking adventure is finished. She tells her dad, "I made sweet magic today!" She realized that Food tastes better when you make it with love. If you were baking with Mai, would you choose pink frosting or rainbow sprinkles?
