Story Details

Hello! This is Mai. Today, she is washing her hands with soap.

Suddenly, the bubbles grow big and clear like a crystal ball. Mai looks inside and—Pop!—she is in a room full of glass bottles and microscopes. She has traveled back in time to meet the great scientist, Louis Pasteur.

First, Mai sees a kind man with a white beard. He is looking through a Microscope. She learns about Observation. "Hello, little one," says Mr. Pasteur. "I am looking at tiny things called germs. They are too small for your eyes to see!"

Next, Mai looks into the glass. She learns about Bacteria. She sees tiny dots wiggling around. "Are those monsters?" asks Mai. "Some are," explains Mr. Pasteur. "They can make you feel sick, but we can fight them if we are smart."

Now, Mr. Pasteur shows Mai a bottle of Milk. She learns about Pasteurization. He heats the milk gently to kill the "sugar bugs." "Now the milk is safe and healthy for children to drink!" says the scientist. Mai realizes why her mom always boils the milk.

Suddenly, Mr. Pasteur talks about Soap. She learns about Hygiene. "Germs hate soap and clean water," he says. He shows Mai how to scrub her hands properly. Mai realizes that washing hands is like putting on invisible armor to stay strong.

Next, they see a Friendly Dog. She learns about Vaccines. Mr. Pasteur explains that he made a special medicine to keep pets and people safe from a scary sickness called Rabies. "Science is like a shield for the world," he says with a smile.

Now, Mai sees many Glass Tubes. She learns about Experiments. Mr. Pasteur tries many times to find the best medicine. "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!" he tells Mai. Mai learns that being a scientist means being very patient.

Suddenly, a Little Boy comes into the room. She learns about Helpfulness. Mr. Pasteur gives the boy some medicine to help him get well. Mai sees that science is not just about books; it is about helping people feel better and stay happy.

Next, Mr. Pasteur gives Mai a Magnifying Glass. She learns about Curiosity. "Always ask 'Why?', Mai," he says. "The world is full of secrets waiting for a brave girl like you to find them." Mai looks at her own fingernails and sees a whole new world.

Now, it is time for the Bubbles to Return. She learns about Legacy. Mr. Pasteur waves goodbye. "Remember to stay clean and stay curious, Mai!" The laboratory starts to fade, and the soapy bubbles wrap around her again.

The magic Brings Mai Home. She learns about Safety. She finds herself back in her bathroom. Her hands are clean and smell like fresh flowers. She looks at the soap bar and smiles. It is her little weapon against the tiny germ monsters.

Then, Mai tells her Mom about Mr. Pasteur. She learns about Gratitude. She is happy that a smart man from long ago found out how to keep her safe. She drinks her glass of warm milk and feels very strong and healthy.

Finally, Mai goes to Sleep. She learns about Discovery. She dreams of microscopes and stars. She realized that Even the smallest girl can understand the smallest germs and do big things for the world. If you met Mr. Pasteur, would you ask to see the germs or the special milk?
