Story Details

Hello! This is Mai. Today, she is feeling a little bit shy. She sees a neighbor but hides behind her mom.

Suddenly, her pocket glows! She pulls out a small, silver key shaped like a mouth. Mai touches a door, and—Flash!—she is in the Kingdom of Greetings, where words fly like colorful butterflies.

First, Mai arrives at the Gate of "Hello". She learns about Openness. The gate is locked. A friendly bird says, "To pass, you must say the magic word!" Mai takes a deep breath and says, "Hello!"

The gate swings open with a happy chime. Mai learns that a simple "Hello" is the key to meeting new friends.

Next, Mai meets the Wave Trees. She learns about Body Language. The branches of the trees look like hands. They wave left and right. Swish, swish! Mai waves back with a big smile.

"A wave tells people you are friendly, even before you speak," say the trees.

Now, Mai sees the Smiling Sunflowers. She learns about Eye Contact. The flowers look right at Mai's eyes when they talk. "Looking at someone shows you are listening," says a golden flower.

Mai practices looking at the flowers and feels more confident and brave.

Suddenly, she meets Sir "Good Morning". She learns about Timing. He wears a bright sun-hat. "I am used when the sun wakes up!" he says.

Later, she meets Lady "Good Night", who wears a dress of stars. Mai learns that there is a special greeting for every part of the day.

Next, Mai enters the Hall of Handshakes. She learns about Touch. She meets a friendly robot who offers his hand. Mai shakes it gently but firmly.

"A handshake is a promise of peace," says the robot. Mai feels like a grown-up and very respectful.

Now, she sees the Bowing Lilies. She learns about Respect. In this part of the kingdom, everyone bows their heads politely. Mai bows back to a white lily.

She learns that bowing is a beautiful way to show honor to older people and teachers.

Suddenly, Mai finds the Bridge of "How Are You?". She learns about Caring. To cross the bridge, she must ask someone how they feel. Mai asks a lonely kitten, "How are you?"

The kitten purrs and feels happy. Mai learns that greetings are not just words; they show we care.

Next, Mai meets the Polite Parrots. She learns about Tone. If Mai says "Hello" in a grumpy voice, the parrots hide. But if she says it in a cheerful voice, they sing!

Mai realizes that a kind, warm voice makes everyone feel welcome and safe.

Now, the Grand Festival of Welcome begins. She learns about Hospitality. All the greetings dance together. "Namaste," "Bonjour," "Xin Chao!" They are all different, but they all mean friendship. Mai joins the circle and realizes the world is a big, friendly family.

The silver key Starts to Vibrate. She learns about Returning. Mai knows it is time to go back. She waves to the Wave Trees and the Smiling Sunflowers. "Goodbye!" she shouts.

The kingdom fades, and she is back on her street.

Then, Mai sees her Neighbor again. She learns about Action. This time, she doesn't hide. She looks at the neighbor, waves her hand, and says in a clear, happy voice: "Hello, Uncle! How are you?"

The neighbor smiles back warmly.

Finally, Mai tells her Mom about the trip. She learns about Connection. Mom gives her a big hug. Mai realized that A greeting is the first step on a bridge to a new friend.

If you went to this kingdom, would you like to wave at the trees or bow to the lilies?
