Mio was a sunny little boy who grew up in a joyful family, but he never understood the value of food. He often took just one bite, played with it, or even spit it out. Despite his mother’s efforts to teach him that food is precious, he didn’t listen. His younger sister - Nini, was upset by his wastefulness.

One afternoon, as usual, Mio played with his food and picked at it. As he ate, he grabbed a handful of food and ran out into the garden to play. What he didn’t expect was that something even more interesting would happen. To his surprise, the food in his hand suddenly came to life and started to struggle to escape!

Shocked but curious, Mio chased after a French fry that had slipped out of his hand. “Where are you rushing off to?” he asked. The French fry replied, “When humans don’t want us and waste us, we lose all our value and are thrown into a dark, smelly, disgusting place. That place is not only filthy but also full of bugs and flies that eat us until we rot. I don’t want to die like that!” The fry cried pitifully as it spoke.

While the fry was explaining, an angry drumstick suddenly appeared. “It’s all your fault!” the drumstick shouted furiously. “It’s you humans who make our lives so miserable! Why do you break us apart from our families and waste us without a second thought? You have families, and so do we! Why do you get to destroy us and treat us like we’re worthless?!” The drumstick’s eyes burned with fiery anger.

At that moment, Nini searching for her brother, saw something unbelievable. Mio suddenly began to shrink! With a loud “Boom!” he was flung away by the angry drumstick and disappeared from sight. When Mio landed, his body burned from the impact. He looked around and realized he was in a completely unfamiliar place. Fear began to overwhelm him, and he cried as he searched for a way back home.

As Mio wandered, he saw some familiar faces being chased by an angry group of food. Suddenly, a memory flashed in his mind — they were the family he had seen at a restaurant a few days ago! That day, they ordered a table full of food but only took a few bites before paying the bill and leaving. None of them had appreciated the meal or thought about finishing it. Now, watching them run in panic, Mio began to tremble and shrink back in fear.

As the day turned to night, Mio was still no idea how to find his way home. Exhausted from crying, hungry, and surrounded by darkness, he cried even harder, realizing how scary it was to be alone without his family feeding him or taking care of him. The dark night stretched on, and for the first time, Mio understood how painfully slow and lonely each second could feel.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the sky began to brighten. Just then, Mio heard a voice. “Mio? What are you doing here?” It was the French fry!

The fry pulled the shivering Mio to his feet and took him to its hometown — a potato field. There, Mio saw a giant farmer pull up a bundle of potatoes. Laughing and cheering as they saw the daylight. They were the French fry’s relatives.

The potato family took Mio to a small creek to drink some water and played with him, trying to ease his fear and loneliness. However, before long, a group of giants arrived at the field and began separating the potato family. Despite their deep sadness, the potatoes tearfully said their goodbyes and accepted their fate.

“They believe,” the potato family told Mio, “that as long as their lives are used meaningfully — bringing joy and health to humans — then their existence is worthwhile.” Mio watched as the potato family was turned into food for the giants’ table. He couldn’t hold back his tears.

At that moment, a bunch of grapes approached Mio with warm smiles. “Mio,” it said gently, “I’m sweet and nutritious. Aren’t I one of your favorite foods? You look so hungry. Why don’t you eat me?” Mio shook his head, crying. “No! If I eat you, you’ll die!” The grape comforted him, saying, “Don’t be afraid, Mio. We are food, and being cherished is our greatest happiness. If we can nourish you and bring you joy, then our lives are meaningful.”

Mio was deeply moved by the grape's words and felt full of remorse. He sincerely apologized to all the food he had wasted and promised never to waste food again. The French fry, grapes, and potatoes smiled warmly and even made a pinky promise with him.

Suddenly, Mio heard Nini’s voice calling out to him. Gradually, his body began to grow, and he returned to his normal size. The French fry, grapes, and potatoes waved goodbye, smiling at him as he left. Mio’s eyes reddened with tears, reluctant to part from them. When he opened his eyes, he found himself back in the garden. Nini stood there, giggling sweetly. Overwhelmed with emotion, Mio hugged his little sister tightly.

From that day on, Mio approached every meal with gratitude, cherishing every bite of food. Whenever he saw other children wasting food, he would tell them the story of the lives of food, reminding them that every piece of food represents a life, and it should always be respected and appreciated.

The End. I hope this book inspires you to cherish food. Thank you for enjoying my storybook! 《Mio's Delicious Lesson》.
