Timble slipped into the old broom closet behind Room 12. The door creaked shut, and suddenly, the small space stretched wide. Bright lights flickered, and a swirl of colors spun in the air—a secret school hidden inside the closet!
Timble blinked. Spells whispered backward. "pwelS" they seemed to say, twisting and turning like a puzzle.
A suitcase zipped by, wheeling itself with a soft pop! Timble reached out, but it zipped higher, humming like a tiny engine.
"Hey!" he called, but the suitcase flipped and zipped through the air like a bird. Timble chased it, stepping over floating books and tumbling hats.
Suddenly, the floor wobbled beneath him. Spells backfired, mix-matching words and colors. Timble’s heart raced. He tried to catch the suitcase again as it spun faster, leaving a trail of sparkles.
It stopped! But—oh no!—it opened, and out dropped dozens of tiny clocks, all ticking at different speeds.
The clocks ticked backward, and time seemed to twist. Timble felt dizzy. He grabbed a clock, and the ticking slowed. "I’m a Middling," he whispered, remembering what his teacher said. "In-between means power."
Timble thought hard. He stretched out his hands, feeling the flow of time and magic, mixing forward and backward.
Slowly, he waved his hands, and the clocks started ticking together. The suitcase zipped back to his side, calm now. The spells straightened out, whispering forwards again.
Everything settled. The secret school was safe, for now. Timble smiled, knowing being in-between wasn’t a weakness—it was his greatest strength.
