A Family Gift for Mio One early morning, Mio sat by the window watching families walk their children to school.
She sighed softly.
“I wish my family could have dinner together, just once,” she whispered.
Her parents were always busy. Her father worked night shifts, her mother ran a small shop, and her older brother often stayed late for sports practice.
Most evenings, Mio ate alone.
That afternoon, while doing homework, an idea suddenly appeared in her mind.
“What if I prepare dinner myself? Maybe… maybe everyone could sit together tonight.”
She clenched her hands with determination.
Mio opened the refrigerator. There were only a few vegetables, some potatoes, and one egg.
“It’s not much,” she murmured, “but I’ll do my best.”
She washed the vegetables and sliced the potatoes. Her small hands trembled a little, but her eyes stayed focused and steady.
Soon, the warm smell of soup filled the house.
Mio set three chairs around the table and placed a handwritten note in the center: “Family Dinner. Please come home a little early today.”
Evening fell. Mio sat waiting with her hands clasped tightly.
“I hope they can come…” she thought, heart beating fast.
The door opened. Mother entered first. She looked tired but smiled warmly when she saw the table. “Oh, Mio… did you make all this?”
Mio nodded shyly, her cheeks turning pink.
Father came home too, his clothes dusty from work. Her brother rushed in, out of breath from running.
They all looked at the simple meal, then at Mio. Warmth lit up their eyes.
Father gently patted her head. “It’s been so long since we all ate together.”
Mother placed a hand on her shoulder. Her brother pulled out a chair and grinned. “Sit next to me tonight, little chef.”
They began to eat, sharing stories about their day. The kitchen felt brighter, warmer than usual.
Mio’s smile glowed. “I finally have a real family dinner,” she said softly.
When the meal ended, Mother spoke: “From now on, our family will have at least one dinner together every week.”
Mio hugged everyone tightly.
A family didn’t need to be perfect. As long as they cared for each other, it was enough.
