FRIENDS IN THE WIND Milo the young squirrel dreamed of making a small kite, one bright enough to dance with the morning wind. He gathered thin sticks and red paper, but every time he tried to tie them together, the wind tugged the sticks from his paws. After the third try, Milo sighed softly and whispered, “I wish someone could help.”

Just then, Luna, a tiny blue bird with bright eyes, fluttered down beside him. She tilted her head and asked, “Are you building a kite?” When Milo nodded, she smiled. “I can hold the sticks with my beak. Let’s do it together.” Milo felt hope spark inside him. “Thank you, Luna.”

They worked side by side, tying the red paper to the frame. The breeze tickled the soft edges of the paper, making it flutter like a shy leaf. Milo felt excitement bubble in his chest, and Luna’s eyes glimmered with joy.

But before they could finish, a strong gust swooped in and ripped the paper in half. The kite dropped to the ground. Milo’s tail drooped. “We have to start again,” he murmured.

Luna hopped closer and said gently, “Let’s try thicker paper.” Milo nodded. “Because the wind is strong… so we need stronger wings.” They searched beneath an old tree and found bright yellow paper, smooth and sturdy. Milo cut careful curves, and Luna pressed each corner flat with her wings. Their movements matched like a little rhythm—paw, wing, tie, fold.

When they lifted the kite again, another sudden whoosh spun it sideways. Milo grabbed it tightly while Luna flapped hard to steady it. Instead of feeling frustrated, Milo burst out laughing. “The wind is wild today!” Luna chirped back, “Then we will be wilder!”

Together, they stepped into the open field. “One… two… run!” Milo shouted. They ran together—tiny feet and quick wings moving as one.

Slowly, slowly, the kite began to lift. Then it caught a strong gust and soared high into the sky. The yellow paper glowed like a small sun above them.

Milo felt a warm glow in his chest. Luna flew in circles beside the rising kite. “We did it,” they whispered at the same moment, smiling. They lay down on the soft grass and watched the kite dance in wide loops, the tail flicking like a happy ribbon.

After a peaceful moment, Milo said, “It’s better when we try together.” Luna nodded softly. “Friends make small ideas fly.” Milo held the string gently, watching the kite soar higher than he ever imagined—because this time, he wasn’t flying it alone.
