Mr. Davies clapped his hands. "A-B-C!" he chirped.

Twenty little eyes stared blankly. Songs droned. Charts hung limp.

The alphabet was a monster. The children squirmed.

They wiggled. They yawned big, cavernous yawns.

One sunny day, they trundled to the park pond. A huge, white swan glided by.

Its neck was long. Its body was smooth. Lily pointed a tiny finger. "Look! It's an 'S'!"

Her voice was a loud squeak. The swan curved. It was a perfect 'S'.

Then the swan stretched. Its head bent down. Bobby shouted, "It's a 'C'!"

He bounced up and down. The swan looked like a 'C'.

Everyone giggled. The alphabet monster shrank a little.

Two swans met. They touched heads. "They make an 'M'!" Maya cried.

Her eyes were wide. The swans looked like a grand 'M'.

The children cheered. Mr. Davies blinked hard.

The alphabet was in the water! The swans waddled. They pecked.

They showed letters everywhere. Learning felt like magic.
