Discover the magic behind rainbows! This story explains in simple terms how sunlight and raindrops work together to create the beautiful arch of colors we see in the sky after it rains, explaining concepts like refraction and reflection.
I am standing outside. The rain has just stopped. I can still smell the wet grass. The ground is covered in small puddles, and everything looks fresh. But the sky is still a bit gray.
I see the sun starting to come out from behind a dark cloud. It is shining bright white light. At the same time, there are still tiny, tiny raindrops floating in the air. They are like little glass beads.
I look at one single raindrop. When the white sunlight hits the water drop, something magic happens. The light doesn't just go through; it slows down and bends. This is called refraction.
Inside the raindrop, the white light splits open. Remember the secret? White light is actually made of a team of colors! Inside the drop, the red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet all separate.
The colors hit the back of the raindrop. They don't go out the back. Instead, they bounce off the inside of the drop like a ball hitting a wall. This is called reflection.
The colors fly back out of the front of the raindrop. As they leave the water, they bend one more time. Now, instead of one white beam, we have a beautiful fan of colors stretching across the sky.
One raindrop makes a tiny bit of color. But I see millions and millions of raindrops in the air! Each one is sending colors to my eyes at the same time. Together, they create a giant, glowing arch.
I look at the arch carefully. The colors are always in the same order. Red is always on the top because it bends the least. Violet is always on the bottom because it bends the most.
I see a half-circle, like a giant colorful bridge. But here is a secret: a rainbow is actually a full circle! I can only see the top half because the ground gets in the way. If I were in an airplane, I might see the whole ring!
I look at a garden hose. I see someone spraying water in the sun. Look! A tiny rainbow appears in the mist. I don't need a big storm to see the magic; I just need sunlight and water drops.
I watch as the sun gets stronger and the air gets dry. The tiny raindrops disappear. Without the water "mirrors," the colors fade away. The rainbow says goodbye and disappears into the blue sky.
I look up at the empty sky and smile. A rainbow is a reminder that even after a gray, rainy day, the sun can bring back beautiful colors. Nature is the best artist in the world.
