Hello! This is Leo. Tonight, the moon looks like a giant, glowing wheel of Swiss cheese. Leo has decided that he wants to see it for himself. He isn't going to wait for NASA; he is going to build his own spaceship in the garage. Today is the launch of the Cheese-Explorer 1!

First, Leo gathers his Aerospace Materials. He uses a large refrigerator box for the main cabin and four empty soda bottles for the engines. He learns about Recycling. He realizes that with enough silver duct tape and imagination, a piece of cardboard can become a vessel capable of traveling through the stars.

Next, Leo designs the Control Panel. He glues bottle caps and old buttons onto a dashboard. He labels them "Turbo," "Gravity," and "Snack Mode." He learns about User Interface. A pilot needs to know exactly which button to press when they are flying past Mars or avoiding a space-rock!

Now for the Life Support System. Leo packs a lunchbox with real cheese cubes, crackers, and a juice box. He learns about Provisions. You can’t go to the moon on an empty stomach! He also brings his teddy bear, Major Teddy, to be his co-pilot and navigator.

Leo puts on his Space Suit. It is a white hooded sweatshirt and a bike helmet with a shiny visor. He learns about Atmospheric Pressure. He pretends his suit is pressurized to keep him safe from the "vacuum of space," even though he is actually just standing on his garage floor.

It is time for the Final Countdown. Leo climbs into the box and closes the hatch. "Ten... nine... eight..." He feels the "vibration" of the engines (which is actually just him shaking the box). He learns about Anticipation. The most exciting part of any journey is the moment right before you leave the ground.

"Blast off!" Leo imagines the G-Force pressing him back into his seat. He "flies" past the kitchen window and through the clouds. He learns about Trajectory. He has to aim his rocket exactly at the moon, otherwise, he might end up floating toward the icy rings of Saturn!

Leo looks out his "porthole" (a hole cut in the side of the box). He sees the stars twinkling in the dark. He learns about Constellations. He points his flashlight out the window and pretends to draw the Big Dipper on the garage wall. The universe feels huge and wonderful.

Finally, the rocket "lands" with a soft thud on the lunar surface. Leo opens the hatch and steps out onto the Cheese Moon. He learns about Low Gravity. He takes giant, slow-motion leaps across the garage. He pretends the floor is made of "Moon-zarella" and "Cheddar-dust."

Leo uses a plastic spoon to take a Scientific Sample of the moon (a piece of cheese from his lunchbox). He learns about Geology. He examines the "craters" in his cracker and decides that the moon is delicious. Exploration is much more fun when you can eat your discoveries!

Suddenly, Leo hears a voice from "Mission Control" (it’s his mom). "Leo, the moon mission is over! It’s time for dinner!" Leo learns about Time Management. Even the greatest astronauts have to come home when it’s time for spaghetti and meatballs.

Leo "flies" his rocket back to Earth and lands safely in the kitchen. He tells his mom all about the craters and the starry sky. He learns that Sharing Adventures is the best way to end a trip. He feels proud of his engineering and his successful lunar landing.

Leo’s space adventure is finished for tonight. He parks the Cheese-Explorer 1 in the corner of his room. He realizes that the moon is beautiful, whether it’s made of rock or cheese. If you had a rocket ship, would you go to the Moon, or would you fly all the way to a different galaxy?
