Ian and Egor meet again. They are brothers. They live far away from each other. They have not seen each other for a whole year. Ian is five years old. Egor is eight. They missed each other. But now they play together, like always. They draw, talk, and make plans. Tomorrow, they will go to Grandma and Grandpa’s farm.

Grandma and Grandpa welcome the boys with warm smiles. Ian and Egor are happy to be on the farm. In the kitchen, Grandma is cooking lunch. On the table, there is a board and a bowl. A rolling pin is ready nearby. The boys want to help right away.

After lunch, the brothers go outside. On the farm, Ian and Egor have a favorite activity. They like to look for eggs from the hens. Usually, the eggs are in the henhouse. But today, things are different. The hens laid eggs in many places around the yard. Now the search feels like a real adventure.

Ian and Egor do not want to miss haymaking. It is an important and exciting task. They go to the field with Grandpa. Together, they help with the work. When the work is done, the cut grass lies in neat rows. Grandpa is on one side of the field. The boys are on the other side. They remember what Grandpa said: “Do not walk on the cut grass.” So the brothers choose a careful way to go.

On the way back from haymaking, Ian and Egor look out the window with curiosity. They see many different vehicles on the road. The boys can tell the difference between farm vehicles, forestry vehicles, and construction vehicles. Then the brothers start a game. They count every vehicle they see on the way.

Grandpa and the boys decide to fix their rides. Egor needs help with his bike. Ian needs help with his scooter. When they enter the garage, they stop and look around. There are so many different things inside! Finding the bike and the scooter is easy. But finding the right parts is much harder.

It is time to work in the vegetable garden.Ian and Egor look around. So many plants are growing here! Then Egor has an idea. He will weed the plants that grow in the ground. Ian will weed the plants that grow above the ground.

Ian and Egor’s grandpa loves gardening. He has his own greenhouse. Many different flowers grow there. Grandma and Grandpa often make beautiful bouquets from flowers in their garden.

Many animals live on Grandma and Grandpa’s farm. There is a cow, some piglets, chickens, and many others. Grandpa tells the boys what each animal likes to eat. Ian and Egor have fun. They count the animals and give them tasty treats.

One evening, Ian and Egor play shadow theater. They build a small hut. They hang a white sheet. They turn off the light and keep only the soft light of a table lamp. The boys make different shapes with their hands. The shadows move and change. They look like they come to life on the sheet. Ian and Egor have fun, guessing what the shadows look like.

Grandma and Grandpa’s house is surrounded by shady woods and green fields. These are good places for cows to walk. During the day, a herder looks after the cows. In the evening, the cow needs to come home. At the end of the day, Grandma lets Ian and Egor meet the cow in the pasture and walk her home.

Grandma asked Ian and Egor to go to a nearby store. She gave them a shopping list and some money. “Buy everything on the list,” said Grandma. “And if there is any change left, you can choose one dessert each.” The brothers like feeling that they are almost like grown-ups.

Ian and Egor went up to the attic with Grandma. They had always thought the attic was mysterious and interesting. While Grandma was looking for empty jars, the boys looked around. There were boxes with old toys, clothes, and books. They even found their moms’ old school notebooks. Suddenly, a photo fell out. In it were their moms, very young, standing next to a pumpkin scarecrow. “These are your moms when they were children,” Grandma smiled. Ian and Egor decided they wanted to make a scarecrow too.

The boys went out into the backyard. They had already found some things for the scarecrow in the attic. They still needed a few more. Ian and Egor looked around carefully, searching for a pumpkin.

In the evening, Grandma, Grandpa, Ian, and Egor sat together. They drank raspberry tea, ate apple pie, and looked at old photo albums. Grandma told them who was in the pictures. Grandpa shared funny stories. In one album, Grandma found an old drawing. “It is a Tree of Life,” she said. It shows how family members are connected: parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters. “Every family can draw its own Tree of Life,” said Grandma. Ian and Egor felt warm and calm. They enjoyed this quiet family evening.
