Once upon a time, a prince lived in a large castle. He wanted to marry a real princess.

The prince went to many places. He met many princesses. But none were real princesses.

“I want to marry a real princess,” said the prince. But he could not find one.

One stormy night someone knocked on the castle door. Rain and wind blew outside.

At the door stood a young woman. Her clothes were wet from the rain.

“I am a princess,” said the young woman. “Can you help me?”

The queen looked at her. “Let us see if she is a real princess,” thought the queen.

That night the queen put a small pea on the bed. Then she put many soft mattresses on the bed.

The bed grew higher and higher. Soon all the mattresses were on the bed.

The young woman climbed onto the tall bed. Soon everyone in the castle went to sleep.

In the morning the queen asked, “Did you sleep well?” “No!” said the young woman.

“There was something hard in my bed,” she said. “I could not sleep.”

The queen smiled when she heard this. Only a real princess could feel the tiny pea.

The prince was very happy. “I have found a real princess,” he said.

The prince and the princess were married. They lived happily ever after.
